The 3 Kinds of People You Need to Succeed in Life

Imagine you’re about to head on a long road trip, and you’ve got room for 4 people in your car. Who would you take with you? Depends on the destination, right?

If the destination was success, who would be riding in the car with you? Remember, these will be the ones that will have the power to influence your course. When it comes to success, the people that you surround yourself with are critical. They have the power to a) encourage it b) inhibit it c) be indifferent to it. You want to make sure you invest most of your time with Group A.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”Be around people who not only lift you up, but you can also help lift higher.” – Jim Rohn

What kind of people make up a solid circle that can facilitate your success and wellbeing? These are people who encourage you in the right ways, offer constructive criticism (you don’t want to be surrounded by a bunch of yes-men, after all), and who motivate you to think in new ways rather than making rash decisions.

How do you know if you have a circle optimized for your success? You should have an equal balance of the following three groups:

1. People who are at a higher level than you (Mentors)

These are the people you look up to and go to for guidance. They’re the ones with the expertise and behaviours that you aspire to have. They not only inspire you, but challenge you. They drive you to learn more become more creative, and do something more meaningful. They set the bar high.

2. People who are at the same level as you (Peers)

These are the ambitious friends who are also riding on the same journey to success. They will support you, stimulate you, and help you be more productive. These peers won’t hold you back from your goals; they will keep you on track and help you perform at your best. They are the sounding boards that you need when you’re trying to understand if you’re on the right track.

3. People who aspire to be at your level (Mentees)

These are the people that you have the power to strengthen and help grow. Investing your time in this group allows you to use your skills for good, while also making you better in what you do. It can increase another person’s experience while helping you learn something new and gain fresh insights. Uplifting and empower others to succeed is one of life’s most rewarding experiences. No matter where you are in life, there are always people who you will find your experiences and stories to be helpful or inspirational. Sharing the experiences that you have had to date can change the world for someone.

A third of your group should be made of each of above. They all add immense value to your life, all at different points in their lives and success, but all with a similar passion and desire in life.

Evaluate your circle. Is it made of a 1/3 of each of these groups? No? Then, make it balanced. Choose the right people to take with you on the road to success.
